Discover techniques to make sculptures from steel and other metals.
Learn how to cut, form and weld metal with flame, arc and power tools!
Philip has been sculpting and fabricating with metals for 25 years and has a wealth of teaching experience.
He is City & Guilds qualified welder, creates his own sculptures and fabricates sculpture for other artists. Join him in his workshop in Newhaven on the South Coast of England for a day or two of metal creativity!
Detailed description:A day working with the metalworking and welding techniques that Philip uses when fabricating and making his metal sculptures.
This course is offered as a one on one session, or for two to three people to attend - this could be for friends, a couple, or a parent and child/children (aged 11 and over)
The full day workshop will focus on the skills needed to cut, manipulate and join steel, then use these skills to make your own metal artwork to take home. This could be a wall sculpture cut from steel and decorated with welding and finishing techniques, or a simple 3d free-standing sculpture.
If you have ideas for something you would like to make you are welcome to contact Philip to discuss these ahead of time.
You will be introduced to a variety of tools and equipment including:
● Metal cutting saws
● Angle grinders
● Metal benders and rollers
● MIG welding (TIG/MMA welding processes are available but for short courses MIG is recommended)
● Oxyacetylene cutting and heating
● Forge and anvil
● Metal finishing Get ready for hot metal, sparks and metal wrangling! Philip will also give you an insight into his practice and how to get into metal art or metal fabrication, over a well brewed coffee, tea or infusion.
Working predominantly in metals, I have been designing and making sculpture and furniture since 2002.
These artworks have been made from steel, stainless steel, bronze and copper. They include small and large scale works, private and public commissions, and I often fabricate metal artworks for other artists.
I live in Brighton and run my practice from my studio in Newhaven, East Sussex.
I am City and Guilds qualified, having passed Lvl 1, 2 and 3 diplomas in Engineering - Fabrication and Welding.
I tutored BTEC MAG Welding and Brazing at secondary school level for two years, and have run educational workshops with a huge number of schools, colleges and community groups over the years.
I spent 11 years based in two secondary schools as an ‘Artist in Residence’ where I mostly ran metalwork workshops.
I love the processes of metalworking and increasing my knowledge in that and other making areas, as well as sharing my own experience with others.
I currently have a position at Plumpton College as a visiting tutor, where I teach City & Guilds welding to young adults as part of their Blacksmithing course.

Children aged 11 or older are welcome but the PPE that they must wear is adult sized, so if they are small this could be difficult.
The metal tables we work on are 90cm high so they also need to be tall enough to be comfortable working at that level.
I will do what I can to accommodate children, as parent and child workshops are a lot of fun and very rewarding.
