About the experience

Experience Duration : 3 hrs
Experience Summary:

During London Craft Week, work with two experienced designers and create a new story on your clothes by narrating a textile composition. Learn how to rework your garments using khadi cotton iron-on patches and natural dye woodblock printing.

Feel inspired by Morgan's exhibition, running alongside this unique experience. She will be showcasing the launch of her soft furnishing collection in collaboration with Rajasthan based suppliers. Her display will represent ethical ways of design through techniques such as woodblock printing, natural dyeing and up-cycling. It will exhibit natural fibres only and celebrate organic and rain fed ‘khadi’ cotton.

Detailed description:

During London Craft Week, you will have fun pressing magical motifs, colours and patterns onto textiles. I'm a skilled printer with specialist knowledge working with Indian partners in Jaipur and Nadia is a sustainable fashion designer, reimagining traditional mending to create contemporary fine fashion.

1. Firstly, you will look at examples of Indian block-printed fabrics and explore artists who have influenced me, and Nadia's work.

2. You will be taught the block printing technique using natural dyes and hand-carved woodblocks sourced from India. You will think about colour and composition and experiment with the iron-on patches.

3. The final part of the workshop will focus on the skills you have learned, by accessorizing your own garment brought from home. You will be able to explore the space and exhibition throughout the day. Light refreshments will be provided.

About the host

Hi! my name is Morgan, I'm a Chelsea College of Arts graduate, textile designer, specialist block printer and teacher. I love Indian textiles, and after living in Jaipur for 6 weeks, I've built upon skills and lifelong connections with amazing artisans and makers. Now I produce beautiful printed textiles with a social enterprise based in Rajasthan and teach block printing workshops in London. my work is driven by social causes, such as supporting and nurturing the artisan way of life, alongside ethical methods, such as natural dyes and indigenous fibres. My wish is to share these methods of printing with others through colourful and imaginative textiles.

Nadia Piechestein is a London based fashion designer. Proudly from Argentina, she launched one of the first ethical brands there, called TLZ Movement Clothes. Her sustainable approach combines slow fashion techniques with zero-stock and zero-waste production. Her latest collection brings together the most exquisite embroidery combined with hand woven fabrics, in collaboration with local makers. She has recently dropped the ‘iron-on patches’, designed with a mission to stop clothes from being wasted. They are a self made invention which has been produced with ethically conscious cotton farmers in India.

Places we'll visit

You will experience the feel of a design studio at Craft Central, an inspirational space with a vibrant community of makers, crafters, artists and creatives. The building is located in East London, just a 15 minute walk away from Greenwich and Canary Wharf. Greenwich is said to be one of the best places to visit in London. It offers something of interest to every visitor! From historic attractions and world-class museums to beautiful parks and bustling markets. Canary Wharf is London's central business district. It boasts many towering office buildings and luxurious residential properties that overlook the River Thames and many of the city's most notable landmarks, such as One Canada Square. It is a great place to eat, shop and explore.
