About the experience

Experience Duration : 3 hrs
Experience Summary:

Hi,

I'm Hafifa and my passion is Arabic Calligraphy. Im here to take you on this journey of learning this beautiful script. You will learn to create these letters, before drawing an abstract pattern at the end. This is also a  mindful experience as it involves bringing your whole body and breath whilst drawing the letters. It involves slowing down and really taking the time to connect your hand and eye movement.

Once you have learnt the letters you can construct  endless patterns and also use it as a way of mindful drawing when you need to slow down and reconnect.

Detailed description:

Hi, Im Hafifa and I will be providing you with an insight into the wonderful world of Arabic Calligraphy. We will look at a brief history of how this script developed , before going on to practice drawing the letters. Once we have done this , I will be guiding you in making your own individual patterns or you can use a template for one. Learning how to write your own name in this script is also another option that you can do if you wish.

There will be break half way through and tea/coffee/cold drink and biscuits/cakes will be provided, gluten free is also available.

The location will be in my house, in a large airy room. there is no need to bring any materials as I will be providing everything you will need for this experience.

We will be using chisel tip graphic pens, traditional reed pens ( qualms) and inks to draw the letters. All practice paper will be provided, before you draw out your final piece on good quality paper.

About the host

My Passion for learning Arabic Calligraphy led me to finding a calligraphy teacher from Bradford, who was in turn taught by a master calligrapher from Pakistan - Khurshid Gohar Qalam. As calligraphers are traditionally taught by a Master, there was a direct chain of transmission, which I hope to pass on in this experience with you. Since then, I have learnt several other  styles of Calligraphy and went on to do an MA in Creative practice at Leeds Arts University. I have also recently completed a Research project May 2022- October 2023 which resulted in a series of heart sculptures being made as well as a series of prints and a calligraphic film.

I have done several workshops, including a 10 week online course during the Covid era.More recently I have combined screenprinting with Arabic calligraphy and have run workshops for young people in Leeds.
