Detailed description:Influencing LGBTQ cultures globally, drag has always been a way to explore identity and gender, engaging in socio-political conversations beyond the hair, make-up & sequins its commonly associated with. Drag identities have been at the forefront of milestone movements such as LGBTQ Pride and Gay Liberation Front. The Castro Queens cabaret is a true celebration of drag as an art form and takes place in an intimate theatre bar in The Castro district: the historic LGBTQ heart of San Francisco.
Whether you’re LGBTQ or anything either side you’re welcome! This is an inclusive space where one & all are part of our family! Enjoy a line-up packed with comedy sketches, lip-synching battles, burlesque performances and an extensive, tasty cocktail menu! For you to really get in the mix, the cabaret ends with a Vogueing workshop where you’ll learn to ‘LIVE…WERK….POSE and VOGUE’ like the LGBTQ ballroom legends who inspired the 80’s Vogue dance phenomenon and that Madonna record.
This experience promises to entertain with unmatchable levels of energy, pizazz and the always welcome je ne sais quoi. All while honouring the history of drag as an art and culture that’s shaped our wonderful city by bay.
Hello my Darlings, Koko here! I was born & raised in the small tumbleweed town of Jefferson, Texas. I never felt it was a place I really belonged, or where I could flourish. I came to San Francisco aged 19 like most who end up here: searching for something - even if not sure what for! This city is the most welcoming place, and particularly the LGBTQ community instantly made it feel like true home. I was welcomed with arms (and make-up bags!) wide open.
Twelve years on, I’m one of Frisco’s many adopted drag daughters and performance artists. I established The Castro Queens collective five years ago as a space for fellow queens, artists, and identities across the LGBTQ spectrum. Our mission is not complicated. It is to share with the world what we know best: love and laughter through performance and entertainment.
I’ve been compere at our resident cabaret since 2017. I’t’s proven a chance for the TCQ collective to meet people from all walks of life (on and off the LGBTQ spectrum). We hope that however you identify you feel welcome enough to walk our way soon. As remember …perspective comes by walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. In this case, the shoe may just be a size twelve killer heel!
