About the experience

Experience Duration : 2 hrs 30 mins
Experience Summary:

Prepare to immerse and indulge yourself in fresh Arabian produce, in a bustling and traditional Abu Dhabi souk. Led by a local market trader, explore the Emirati take on a ‘farmer’s market’. With a delightful mix of fruits, vegetables, spices and authentic dishes, you’ll get a real feel for the culture of Middle Eastern cuisine. A few hours of true ‘taste and learn’ awaits you!

Detailed description:

Join me to get lost in the incredible ‘Al Mina’ market. We start our tour with some history about the market; one of the city’s most colourful locations. Because my family has traded here for decades, you can expect an experience like a true local!

Touring the huge variety of stalls, you can see and buy fresh, tropical fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, nuts and bold spices. Make sure to arrive hungry as you can taste anything you’d like to!

Into the outdoor restaurant corner of Al Mina, we have an area packed with both permanent and pop up dining options. Here you have the opportunity to sample endless amounts of regional dishes made with produce from the market. Whether it’s chicken dishes paired with ‘Toum’ (a yummy and creamy garlic aioli), or richly succulent beef teamed with fresh tahini, to mouth-watering veggie/vegan options like Fattoush salad, spiced fava bean couscous and lentil dish ‘Mujaddara’.

To finish off our tour, we fully immerse ourselves in local custom and visiting a hidden gem; a traditional Falafel bar. With a childhood friend of mine being the owner, you’ll get a unique experience that sets this apart from the normal tour. Learn about the different types of falafel, how it’s made and get hands on yourself making the famous dish before you enjoy it! Why not do like a traditional local does and sit on the floor to eat using your hands? No pressure though, you can of course eat with cutlery!

Before goodbye, I hope you join me at my family’s shop to sample or take home classic Emirati cakes, pastries and sweets.

About the host

I am Farah, a passionate Abu Dhabi junior pastry chef and part time tour guide. As well as helping run my family’s pastry and sweets business, I love to show off my lovely City the best way I know how: through its authentic ethnic food offer!

I’m food and flavour obsessed of course and also a super nerdy history buff. I am a world ‘wanderluster’ at heart. I have travelled a good amount in North America and Europe, living for two years in Edinburgh, UK studying business management. While I’ve been fluent in English from a young age, this is where I picked up my slightly bizarre Scottish accent! It certainly sets me apart from the crowd and gets a laugh at least! Hopefully you will get to hear it one day over some food filled fun!
