About the experience

Experience Duration : 4 hrs
Experience Summary:

Enjoy all the energy of carnival with an exciting night of live samba. This is an evening full of dancing, colour and character joining the beautiful, talented samba dancers and welcoming locals. You’ll get the chance to take part in special group school rehearsals guided by a native carnival expert. The evening visits three of the best samba schools, getting involved authentically with the culture. If you don't know how to samba; no need to worry as I’ll give some tips on how to get really involved. But it’s the beats and heart of the locals that will really get you moving!

Detailed description:

The Rio Schools of Samba start preparations well in advance of the March carnival parade at Rio’s The Sambodromo stadium. The schools headquarters host technical rehearsals (ensaios tecnicos) from December to February, through weekly samba parties. This is where the schools practice their competing song in a wildly fun atmosphere with the planned exciting light and sound effects. This gives people a chance to steal a look and feel of the themes planned for the upcoming parades.

My experience takes you to see three of the best Schools of Samba in Rio, to soak up the community energy with the locals themselves. You’ll get to an authentic display of the unique paradise that is the heritage and culture of Brazil. Prepare for a real night to remember where it’s impossible to hold still…you’ll be dancing all night long!

About the host

Hi! I’m Jaqueline from Rio de Janeiro. I grew up and live in the Portela. Portela is one of the most famous schools of samba in Rio and I was lucky enough to be born and raised in this amazing community. My father and I are members of the school and we both plays drums in the battery group.

Carnival is my deepest passion. The whole community works all year to put on the most incredible show for the whole world to see. One of the things that the world doesn’t get to see is the dedication and preparation that goes into Carnival parades. Visiting school rehearsals from a young age and being part of the Portela samba battery gives me the privilege to introduce people not so familiar with this world to it …with me as their local expert. This motivated me to start hosting experiences that are exactly that!

There’s never enough time to see everything that goes into Carnival, but I’ll always give my guests tips on other rehearsals and places to visit whilst in Rio, so they can discover as much as possible about this incredible cultural tradition of us Brazilians.

Places we'll visit

The three schools are some of the most famous rehearsals to visit, all holding Rio Carnival champion titles: Portela: 22 titles. Mangueira: 20 titles. Beija-Flor: 14 titles.
